House Corbray

From Bronze and Iron: An Andal Invasions AGOT Roleplay Project
Arms of House Corbray. Words: 'Pleasure Over Renown'

House Corbray are a House of Andal descent, situated at the base of the largest valley of the jagged peninsulas known as the Fingers, in the eastern reaches of the Vale. Their seat was Heart’s Home.

History

House Corbray trace their rise in the Fingers to the Andal invasion, when Ser Corwyn Corbray, a knight of Andalos, led a host of fellow warriors across the Narrow Sea in search of new lands. With Valyria’s dominion expanding ever westward across Essos, many Andals sought to escape a future of bondage and servitude beneath the dragonlords. Corwyn, like many others, chose instead to shape his own destiny.

Upon landing in the Fingers, Corwyn and his men entered a land fractured by infighting. Petty kings of the First Men warred over sparse holdings, hills, woods, and fishing coves. Seeing opportunity amidst disorder, the Andals abandoned their oaths to their would be liege lords and seized these lands by force. Corwyn himself led the conquest of the Fingers, defeating local rulers Dywen Shell and Jon Brightstone, both of whom had unwisely invited Andal warbands into their service. Shell was burned alive, Brightstone was tortured and beheaded, and Corwyn took their lands and families alike, bedding Shell’s widow and marrying Brightstone’s daughter.

Rather than claiming the title of king, Corwyn Corbray styled himself simply as Lord of the Five Fingers, preferring to build a lasting noble house over fleeting royal ambition.

Though some have questioned the manner of their rise, scorning it as mercenary or treacherous, House Corbray has ever maintained that their actions have brought civilization to a land mired in blood feuds and barbarism. Where the First Men cling to ancient customs and old gods, the Corbrays bring chivalry, piety, and structure.

Notable Members

Lord Corwyn Corbray

Known for leading the Andal conquest of the Fingers, overthrowing rival petty kings and establishing House Corbray as a noble power. He spurned the title of king, titling himself 'Lord of the Fingers'. It was Corwyn that lead House Corbray in securing its dominion over the centre of the Vale, successfully with the help of House Arryn subjugating the mountain clans to his north and defeating the coalition led by House Royce and their king Yorwyck. A hard man, his acts of violence towards first men was well known killing entire villages and forcing children and women to convert or join their men. It was his ruthlessness that cut a path for his Houses rise and the establishment of the faith of the Seven in the Vale. Yet it was this very same ruthlessness that drove a wedge between himself and his own son. Despite not being a king, he is seen as the greatest of the Corbray lords, a peak that was never eclipsed.

King Qyle Corbray

The son of Corwyn Corbray, Qyle was the first of the Corbray to crown himself king formally beginning the age of the Kingdom of the Fingers. Qyles rule started contested with many of his lords disliking his heritage as half andal half first man, and many disagreeing with him taking a commoner as a wife, setting aside his already lawfully married wife to do so. IT was during his time as king that formally saw House Hersy integrated into the realm proper, a feat that gave him much internal power against his detractors. His rule was a hard one, with it being constantly contested by the Bronze King Robar Royce in a series of wars that would last the entirety of the twos life. These wars saw the balance of power shift multiple times, but would end with House Royce on the ascendency and Qyles own vassals growing in discontent.
