Durran the Dour

The songs tell us that Durran the Dour slew Lun the Last, King of the Giants, at the Battle of Crookwater, but scholars still debate whether he was Durran V or Durran VI.

Arms of House Durrandon

Durran the Dour was the fourth-known Durrandon Storm King, ruling after his ancestor Durran Bronze-Axe, in the Age of Heroes. In his reign he conquered the kingswood, and drove most of the giants out of the Stormlands. His descendent, Durran the Ravenfriend, would expand the Kingdom of the Storm further.

History

Durran presided over one of the first great expansions of the Durrandon's kingship. When he was crowned, only Shipbreaker Bay and the rainwood were under the thumb of Storm's End. Hungry for land he turned his eyes west to the vast forest of the kingswood, which was dominated by the giants at that time, and warred with them.

The giants, initially slaughtered by the First Men's superior bronze weaponry against their own stone and wood clubs, gathered under a cunning giant named Lun who could speak the Old Tongue and organised the giants into an great host. They marched to and fought Durran at the Battle of Crookwater, a creek in the kingswood, but Durran himself challenged Lun to a duel in the midst of the battle and cut down the giant king who was ever after known as Lun 'the Last'. The giants broke ranks with Lun's death and the majority fled the Stormlands.
