During the Seven Years' War, Goldengrove was entirely conquered by Jasper Risley, whose alliance with the Lannisters of Casterly Rock proved decisive. The Gardeners failed to retake the castle, and as part of the post-war settlement, Goldengrove, along with significant tracts of land formerly held by House Crane, was ceded to House Risley. The Risleys made Goldengrove their new seat.
Sera Rowan, once queen to King Galayn Gardener, married Turquin Risley, Jasper's heir. She bore him a son before his untimely death, linking the blood of First Men and Andals.
After the death of Jasper Risley, his grandson Robert Risley took over Goldengrove at the young age of 12. Under a dual regency of his mother Sera Rowan and his uncle Renly Risley, he grew into a man, all the while his regents kept negotiating with Highgarden to stave off war. As soon as Robert turned of age, the Gardeners sent a prince to negotiate him bending the knee. While Renly advised him to make his own decision, and Robert wishing to avoid war by bending the knee, Sera told him to not bend to the Gardeners. His mother still holding large sway over Robert, he followed her advice and the Second Goldengrove war began. At the same time, the Rock fell into civil war and help arrived too late and in too small numbers. Beset by the armies of the Reach, the Stormlands and the Children of the Forest, Goldengrove was lost, Renly was slain in battle and Sera was captured during the sack.
With the few surviving men sworn to him, Robert left the Reach  together with his wife Florence Mullendore. They wandered the Riverlands for the next decade, Robert replenishing his forces and hunting bandits all the while. After neigh every bandit in the Riverlands was vanquished, Robert received an invitation from the Rock to come and bend the knee. He was offered lands from the vanquished rebels of the West, primarily house Reyne which faced extinction at the hands of King Tyrion I Lannister. With this the Risleys became new owners of Castamere and bannermen of the Rock, finding a place alongside the other Andal houses of the Westerlands.
Robert gained a lot of prominence in the West during the time of King Tybolt. It was during his reign that Robert became a staple sight in the court of the Rock, constantly offering his advice to the king as his foremost general and marshal of the realm. After King Tybolt, Robert served as the Chief-Councilor in the court of King Gerold II. His son and heir Ronald Risley was a close friend of Gerold's, and the two were almost always at Lannisport, serving the king as his main advisors. It was during this time that the influence of the Risley's grew in leaps and bounds. Gerold was too busy drinking and whoring to rule the realm, leaving all of it in Robert's and Ronald's capable hands. Under the two, a period of peace and stability returned to the West.
During Roberts tenure, keeping forgotten or unfulfilled promises was made the main policy of the Westerlands. Resources were sent to the Mudds, Vances and internally to fulfill promises made by King Tyrion I and King Tybolt. The peace, however, did not last. As Robert was nearing his sixtieth nameday, the Hooded Kings of Banefort made a return under the rule of Mordred Banefort, a necromancer. At the same time, a rebellion erupted in the Denslane, the Bronze Clans having had enough of the abuse suffered under the Lannetts. In the first year of the rebellion, Robert crushed a 15 thousand strong army of undead and cultists that had marched on Castamere with less than 3 thousand men. He marched north to lay siege to Banefort and the Crag afterwards, quickly quashing the rebellion in less than two years. With only a year left until winter, Robert took command of the defeated loyalist armies in the Denslane and crushed the Bronze Clan rebellion as well.
It was during this time that he came to be known as the Golden Knight. Soon after, nearing his seventieth nameday, he set out to Ashmark to deal with one final problem. The Lanny's of Ashmark had been independent in all but name. They paid no taxes, did not pay homage, did not answer calls to arm and did not communicate with the rest of the West. Under the noses of everyone in the West, the Lanny's had crowned themselves kings and gathered armies of unicorn riders, giants and Children of the Forest, their latest king being a descendant of a Child himself. Robert travelled to Ashmark to find answers and reunite Ashmark with the West. It was here that he drew his last breath after being ambushed by the Weg of Ashmark, Pete Lanny. The half-Child had the Knight do some trials to see whether he would bend the knee or kill Robert. While the Lord of Castamere succeeded in solving the riddles put forward, he was unable to beat the second trial - a wrestling match with a giant. His men, however, managed to defeat a large grizzly bear that had been the companion of the first Weg, the grandfather of Pete. Despite fulfilling all the conditions, due to Robert being killed by the king of giants, the men were slain and Robert's body sent to float downriver back to Castamere.
The first decade of the war between Risley and Lanny was mostly skirmishes on the border and staring matches. With Robert’s death, Ronald took over leadership of House Risley and the Westerlands. He had also taken over the duties of guardianship of the young King Robert Lannister. Ronald’s brother Roymar was left in charge of Castamere while Ronald remained at the Rock. It was due to his duties for the realm that Ronald was unable to begin a war against the Lanny’s in earnest. As soon as he became ready to order the invasion, a new problem would rear its head that needed his attention.
It was during this time that the Plumms, still angry over Ronald’s insults years prior, began to plot behind his back. They tried to institute taxes that the Plumm Lord and Robert made a decade prior, though never materialized. The Plumms went behind Ronald’s back as leader of the Counsel to get their tax reform passed by the Queen-Mother. Their scheme, however, only backfired and propelled Ronald ever upwards. The vassals all voiced their discontent at the changes, especially since the Plumm contributions were left unchanged, unlike what Robert had originally proposed. Ronald made use of this, gathering the lords behind him and reverting the changes. The Vyprens specifically were so enraged that they had almost marched on the Plumms if Ronald had not convinced them otherwise. With the Queen-Regent making a fool of herself by approving these changes, and already only having minimal authority, Ronald took over her position as regent of the king.
As soon as King Robert came of age, Ronald tried to escape the Rock and return to Castamere to finally rule as its lord. The king, however, made up any amount of excuses to not let the man retire, sometimes fabricating entire problems for him to fix just so he would stay at the Rock. Age and stress both took a toll on Ronald, and before he was finally allowed to leave, he was nothing like his former self and passed away just a few months after returning to Castamere. This soured the relations between the Risley’s and Lannister’s, Ronald’s brother and nephew, Roymar and Russel respectively, blaming the king for Ronald’s death. The lord had, however, instituted many changes that would outlive him. He had opened the second mint in the Westerlands and the continent, one focused on gold and copper. He had also planned out and begun the construction of the first road network in Westeros. While he had lived to see some of the roads in Castamere finished, he had never gotten to see them expanded outside Castamere and into the rest of the Westerlands.
Having never married nor sired any children due to his not at all hidden preference for men, the lordship of Castamere fell to Roymar Risley. In truth, Roymar had ruled Castamere for close to 40 years by the time he inherited. Both Robert and Ronald spent most of their time at the Rock, leaving Roymar in charge in their absence. Roymar continued his brothers changes, ensuring the mint was up and running and that the road network continued its expansion with all the support necessary. He also distanced himself from the Lannister’s, not inviting them to the funeral of Lord Ronald nor communicating with them at all, leaving that to his son and heir Russel.
Soon enough, preparations were finished and Roymar invaded Ashmark to avenge his father. Prior to the invasion, Peate Lanny, the King of Ashmark, had attempted to assassinate the lord using Weirwood magic, sending Roymar visions, both real and fabricated. The zealous Risley survived through nothing but hatred for the Old Gods and their ilk. He did not, however, survive the invasion of Ashmark. While he was successful in slaying the King of Giants and avenging his father, he was defeated in the final battle and slain. The warhammer Justice was retrieved, though the Golden Coat was lost in the hills and mountains of Ashmark.
Russel Risley inherits Castamere during the Lannisport Double-Wedding, a marriage between his sister Rianne and King Robert, as well as Russel’s marriage to Carissa Vypren.
