===Background===

Like many great houses of the Iron Islands, House Greyiron claims descent from the Grey King, the figure from the [[Age of Heroes]] who is said to have ruled all the Iron Isles. Whether this is true or not, the Greyirons have by most accounts resided on the isle of Orkmont since time immemorial. House Greyiron made their seat in the Iron Keep, and also possessed a secondary keep in the hills of Orkmont. They were often known to act as [[Kings of Salt and Rock|Salt or Rock Kings]] of Orkmont through the ages.<ref name="Driftwood Kings" />

In the days when the Salt and Rock Kings of the Isles constantly fought with each other, a Drowned Priest called [[Galon Whitestaff]] rose to prominence, demanding that the Ironborn reform into one unified kingdom. Thus, the first [[Kingsmoot]] was held, where the Salt and Rock Kings elected [[Urras Ironfoot|Urras 'Ironfoot' Greyiron]]. Some thought that the elective system would reach a quick demise when Urras' son, [[Erich the Ugly|Erich 'The Ugly']], thought to claim the [[Driftwood Crown]] without being elected. However, after pressure built from the captains and kings, he broke the crown apart in his hands and threw the pieces into the sea. The tradition of breaking the old crown apart would linger through many High Kings of the Iron Islands.<ref name="Driftwood Kings" />

Just as a Greyiron was the first High King of the Iron Islands, a Greyiron would also be the last High King. After the death of High King Urragon IV Greyiron, [[Urron Greyiron|Urron 'Redhand']] would seize power after the [[Slaughter of Nagga's Hill]]. He would unmake the title of "High King." After the slaughter, he proclaimed that there would only be one King of the Iron Islands.<ref name="Driftwood Kings" />

Urron Greyiron would go on to oversee the most successful period of Ironborn history in generations. Under his rule, the Ironborn took control of Fair Isle, the Arbor, Bear Island, and the Shield Isles (which were promptly given their original name - the Misty Isles). A [[House Greyiron of Fair Isle|separate branch]] of the house would be created on [[Fair Isle]], which took the [[Grey King|Grey King's]] wife as their sigil. By the end of his long life, Urron recognized that the Andals posed a great threat to future Ironborn success.

Urron was succeeded by his son, [[Urek Greyiron]]. His rule was marked by several failures. The Arbor rebelled, and the Iron Fleet was defeated in multiple attempts to reclaim the island. The [[Giant's Fist]] also stopped paying tribute or interacting with men from the home isles, effectively declaring their independence. 

Ultimately, Urek's rule was cut short after only seven years during an accident in his council chamber which left him dead. His son [[Erich Greyiron|Erich]] being only a young man, and the great captains being disappointed with thew state of the isles, led to the reintroduction of the Kingsmoot.

After the Kingsmoot returned, Greyirons and the men of Orkmont still played an important role in Ironborn exploits.

In 157 A.I., the death of [[Harras 'Black Chain' Hoare|King Harras Hoare]] led to a [[Kingsmoot of 157 A.I.|fiercely contested kingsmoot]]. The leading contenders were Cirrus Goodbrother and his cousin, [[Joron II Greyiron|Joron Greyiron]]. The votes were evenly split, leading to Joron suggesting a Finger Dance to determine the new King. Cirrus would die in the dance, leading to Joron being crowned king. He was the first Greyiron King since Urek Greyiron.
