The Frosts are an ancient House, and were among the most powerful and respected royal houses in the early period of the Age of Heroes. However, since that time the power of neighbouring kings, particularly the [[House Stark|Starks]] of Winterfell and the [[House Bolton|Boltons]] of the Dreadfort have led to significant loss of power and territory. By the time of the Coming of the Andals, House Frost were little more than petty kings of a backwater region of the North, often overshadowed by the Umbers to their north.

In those days, the King of Frosthold was Bormir, who was crowned at 4 years of age when his father was slain in a shocking act of fratricide and regicide both.
