Barrow Hall itself is built upon a lonely hill which the Dustins claim is the First King's final resting place - a physical embodiment of their claim to be his true heirs. Like other certain First Men Houses, such as the Shetts of Gulltown, the Gardener Kings of Highgarden, and the Green High Kings of Dorne.

The title held by the Dustins during the Age of Heroes was that of Barrow Kings, a title that endured until the time of the Coming of the Andals. By this time, the Barrow Kings had become embroiled in a centuries long feud with the Starks of Winterfell, as each fought to be recognised as the dominant kingdom among the myriad realms of the North.
