Gavyn Brownhill, known as Gavyn Greenhill, or in less complimentary circles as Gavyn Greensick, was the twin brother of Avelyn Brownhill, the Magnar of Brownhill, and was the Green King between 86 A.I. and 97 A.I. He would be the penultimate ruler of the Greenblood before the kingdom was destroyed by the Andals. == Appearance == Gavyn Brownhill had the common dark hair of the people of the Greenblood, but lively honey-coloured eyes. Gavyn took meticulous care of his appearance, maintaining a well trimmed beard, and combed hair parted at the centre. Before rising to the Greenseat, he often wore a hood to keep off the blistering sun, and dressed modestly in loose Dornish garb. Once he became king, he became famed for dressing all in green, which earned him his first epithet. == Personality == Gavyn was a calm, quiet - and dedicated man. Above all, he trusted in the traditions of his people and kingdom, and wished to embody them in all he did. Overall, Gavyn Brownhill's approach to the kingship was defined by his desire to rule by consensus, by collective wisdom, and considered action. In another age, he may have been considered a fine king - but the times had changed. He was considered a very learned man, and oft kept his own company when not fulfilling his duties, as many such scholarly men were known to do. In his later years, following the disaster of the Roxton-Santagar affair, Gavyn was increasingly consumed by guilt. == History == Gavyn Brownhill was born in Fourth Moon, 53 A.I. He was born the twin brother of Avelyn Brownhill, a dwarf who was not expected to long outlive the cradle. To the surprise of many he did, but that did not surprise nearly so much as the fact that he would succeed his father as the Brownhill of Brown Hill. There was a deep regard between Avelyn and Gavyn, and they shared much - bonding over their shared trust and love of learning. Gavyn Brownhill first appeared in the public eye during the Choosing of 86 A.I., when he accompanied his brother the Magnar Avelyn to the Greenseat. In a polarised Choosing, Gavyn Brownhill managed to successfully present himself as an moderating force representing the traditional values of the Greenblood. With an increased threat from the Yronwood kingdom, and the presence of an Andal Samuel Santagar putting himself forward for the kingship - Gavyn's claim was seen as a strong one, and he successfully attained the support of Houses Hull, Latebloom, Holt, Nerandyn, and Shell. As king, Brownhill immediately attempted to heal the divisions that might emerge from the choosing. He made Bastian Briar the commander of the martial forces of the kingdom, and sent Dylan Wade and Samuel Santagar on a joint diplomatic mission to the Tor, to treat with Vorian Roxton, who had landed in Dorne and immediately begun to lay siege to the ancient castles of House Briar. Unfortunately, the effort backfired. Samuel Santagar sent Roxton to join the Yronwoods, Santagar himself attempted to march to their aid - forcing Brownhill to declare Santagar a traitor to his oath to abide by the ruling of the Choosing, and join the Greenblood in earnest. Santagar defeated Brownhill's Shell vanguard in the Spottswood, resulting in an indecisive stalemate that resulted in a permanent rift between the Greenblood and House Santagar. The downfall of Gavyn Brownhill did not come to fruition however, until the invasion of the Greenblood by Yorick III Yronwood, and his Roxton Andals. Despite heroic resistance by Bastian Briar's hillmen, the Greenblood armies could not stand before the Andals and their Red Mountain masters, resulting in the capture of the Tor and its hinterlands. The loss of these lands, long considered ancient and sacred, was a terrible blow to the Greenblood. All at once, they felt exposed and vulnerable - and Gavyn King's approach of measured, balanced, cautious kingship now felt like a threat to their very survival. The result was the Briar March, when the families of the Greenblood marched downriver, led by Bastian Briar and Edred King-son, gathering support until they reached the Greenseat. When they finally arrived - Gavyn saw for himself that his legitimacy as the king chosen by the consent of the great families had crumbled. He chose to remove the Green Cloak - and depart into a self-imposed exile. Gavyn did not take to his exile well. Whatever he was seeking in the east, whether knowledge about the nature of the world, or the secret to repelling the Andal hordes - he did not find it. When he eventually returned to Brown Hill, he did so a broken man, drunk more oft than not. Slowly, his wits left him - and death was a dignity for him. == Quotes by Gavyn == "I will not tell you to choose me for your king, for I intend to put my trust in the traditions of the Greenblood, and the wisdom of all. We are not warlords, like the men of the mountains, but nor are we solely dealmakers. We are philosopher kings, my friends." - Gavyn Brownhill making his case during the Choosing of 86 A.I. == Quotes about Gavyn == "Damn you Gavyn! But I'll be damned even more if I don't have you as my King." - Beldecar Neranydn, after deciding to support Brownhill at the Choosing. “Brownhill wished to rule as a king of old. Back when the Yronwood was smaller, the Desert Clans divided, and there were no Easterlings with silvered-iron swords, and hearts of blackest charcoal. He thought he could rely on the same means as kings in safer times, and light the path to wisdom.” - Bastian Briar, shortly before the Briar March. "A wise King should understand that he does not know everything, that much is true. But regardless, he should be wiser than most. The King should lead, not defer." - Samuel Santagar, critiquing Brownhill's temperament.
